Rep. Ilhan Omar has resurfaced on social media to ask supporters for additional campaign donations as federal investigators continue examining allegations of immigration fraud involving the Minnesota Democrat and members of her family.
The progressive congresswoman released a roughly one-minute video Tuesday evening, speaking from the back seat of a vehicle as she addressed the federal investigation that has placed her immigration history under renewed scrutiny.
Omar thanked supporters who had already contributed to her campaign and urged them to continue sending money, warning that the coming weeks would be financially demanding.
Her fundraising appeal comes just over a week after Homeland Security Investigations agents searched her Washington, D.C., residence and seized electronic devices and other materials connected to the investigation.
The October 12 search was conducted under a court-authorized warrant as federal authorities examine whether Omar or members of her family provided inaccurate information during immigration and naturalization proceedings.
Rather than addressing the specific allegations in her latest video, Omar accused President Trump’s administration of attempting to intimidate her ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
She thanked individuals who had contributed money to help oppose what she characterized as an effort by the administration to silence political opponents.
“We know that they’re running scared, we’re not going to be intimidated, we’re not going to be silenced, we’re not going to be scared,” Omar declared.
The congresswoman also promised to return to the campaign trail and participate in Democratic election efforts.
She said she intends to campaign alongside supporters while working to help Democrats gain control of both chambers of Congress.
Omar concluded her message by requesting additional financial contributions, including donations as small as $5.
“It is going to be a very expensive and challenging time and so we appreciate whether you’re able to send $5, $10, $20,” she said.
The video marks one of Omar’s most prominent public appearances since federal investigators searched her home earlier this month.
Agents reportedly seized her cellphone, computers, notebooks and passport during the operation.
The search attracted national attention because Omar is a sitting member of Congress and one of President Trump’s most outspoken political opponents.
Federal investigators are examining immigration documents connected to Omar’s arrival in the United States as a Somali refugee in 1995 and her acquisition of American citizenship in 2000.
The investigation reportedly involves potential immigration fraud, false statements and conspiracy.
Authorities are reviewing whether Omar or members of her family misrepresented information during the process of obtaining immigration benefits and citizenship.
The inquiry has also renewed attention to longstanding allegations involving Omar’s family relationships and previous marriage.
Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and rejected claims that she obtained immigration benefits through fraudulent means.
No criminal charges have been announced against the congresswoman in connection with the current investigation.
The federal search followed years of questions surrounding Omar’s immigration history, including allegations that have circulated since her first congressional campaign.
Federal authorities previously examined some of those allegations during President Trump’s first administration.
According to reporting by The Washington Post, immigration officials reviewed Omar’s records in 2019 but found insufficient evidence to justify a full investigation at that time.
The current investigation has reopened questions about her naturalization paperwork and whether federal authorities were provided accurate information.
Investigators have also issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including requests involving members of Omar’s family.
Recent reports indicate that federal agents interviewed Omar’s older sister, Sahra Noor, as part of the expanding inquiry.
Noor reportedly met voluntarily with investigators last week.
Authorities have not disclosed the substance of that interview or whether it produced information relevant to potential criminal charges.
The Justice Department has also been examining records involving Omar’s late father and the circumstances surrounding his immigration to the United States.
Federal officials are seeking to determine whether the information submitted by family members during the immigration process was complete and accurate.
Any attempt to revoke Omar’s American citizenship would require a separate legal process and sufficient evidence of grounds for denaturalization.
Citizenship cannot be stripped solely because a federal investigation has been opened or because political officials question an individual’s immigration history.
The investigation nevertheless carries potentially serious consequences if prosecutors establish that immigration laws were violated.
White House border czar Tom Homan has previously indicated that denaturalization could be pursued if federal authorities uncover evidence that Omar obtained citizenship through fraud.
Omar and her attorneys have challenged the investigation and questioned the legality of the search of her home.
Her legal representatives have demanded the return of seized materials and raised concerns about whether federal investigators followed the procedures applicable to searches involving members of Congress.
They have also argued that the timing of the investigation, just weeks before an election, raises questions about political interference.
The Justice Department has maintained that the search was conducted under judicial authorization.
The controversy has placed Omar at the center of a broader dispute over the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement priorities.
President Trump has repeatedly criticized Omar’s political positions and called attention to questions surrounding her immigration history.
Omar has responded by accusing the administration of using federal law enforcement against political opponents.
Her latest fundraising video continues that argument, portraying the investigation as an effort to intimidate her and weaken Democratic candidates ahead of the midterms.
The appeal also comes as Omar seeks another term representing Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District.
She has served in the House since 2019 and is a prominent member of the progressive group of Democratic lawmakers commonly known as the Squad.
Her public disagreements with President Trump have included disputes over immigration enforcement, foreign policy and federal spending.
The ongoing investigation has now introduced a legal controversy into the final weeks of her reelection campaign.
Omar’s request for additional donations suggests that she expects the investigation and its political consequences to remain major issues as Election Day approaches.
It is not yet clear how the money raised through her latest appeal will be allocated between campaign activities and any legally permissible expenses connected to responding to the investigation.
Federal campaign finance rules place restrictions on how campaign contributions may be used, including requirements governing legal expenses.
Meanwhile, investigators continue examining immigration records, seized electronic materials and information obtained through subpoenas.
Federal prosecutors have not publicly established that Omar committed immigration fraud, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The congresswoman has made clear that she intends to continue campaigning while contesting the allegations.
Her latest video combines a defense of her political position with a direct appeal for financial support as federal authorities continue reviewing her immigration history.
With the midterm elections approaching, Omar now faces the simultaneous challenges of defending her congressional seat and responding to a federal investigation that could carry significant legal consequences.
