Ivanka Trump has been compelled to provide testimony in the ongoing civil fraud litigation involving former President Donald Trump and the Trump Organization. The ruling was rendered by Judge Arthur Engoron, who determined that Ivanka, despite her departure from her position at the Trump Organization in 2017 and relocation outside of New York, retains pertinent information that is of utmost importance to the case.
The litigation, spearheaded by New York Attorney General Letitia James, asserts that the ex-president inflated his financial assets on official documents submitted to financial institutions and other entities in order to obtain loan approvals. The Trump family and the Trump Organization refute these charges, with the former president characterizing the trial as a politically motivated “sham.”
The involvement of Ivanka Trump in the case has been a subject of disagreement. At the outset, the plaintiff was initially disregarded as a defendant on account of the presence of statute of limitations concerns. Subsequently, her legal representatives, in conjunction with the defense counsel, put out arguments opposing her participation as a witness. The contention was made that she ought not to be subjected to further burdens, given her prior dismissal from the case.
The legal representatives of the state contend that she played a significant role in multiple events currently under scrutiny in the trial, in addition to maintaining ongoing financial and professional ties to the Trump Organization. The Attorney General’s office emphasized that Ivanka possesses significant and relevant information for their inquiry due to her prior stint in the White House.
“While no longer a Defendant in this action, she indisputably has personal knowledge of facts relevant to the claims against the remaining individual and entity Defendants. But even beyond that, Ms. Trump remains financially and professionally intertwined with the Trump Organization and other Defendants and can be called as a person still under their control,” was the argument presented by the AG in a legal document.
Judge Engoron, in support of the state, emphasized the presence of records that provide evidence of Ivanka’s continued business affiliations in New York, such as her ownership of properties. He stated, “Ms. Trump has clearly availed herself of the privilege of doing business in New York,” according to AP News. The office expressed its intention to interrogate her regarding Trump’s previous hotel in Washington, D.C., highlighting her gains from its sale.
“Ms. Trump remains under the control of the Trump Organization, including through her ongoing and substantial business ties to the organization,” stated the AG. They further pointed out, “She does not seem to be averse to her involvement in the family enterprise when it involves receiving profits from the OPO (hotel) sale, the Trump Organization covering her and her company’s insurance, overseeing her domestic workers and credit card expenses, leasing her apartment, or even footing her legal bills in this case. It’s only when she’s confronted to account for such engagements that she denies any affiliation.”
The judge has scheduled the date for her testimony to occur after November 1, so providing her legal team a sufficient period to pursue prospective challenges.
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking to conduct an interrogation of Ivanka Trump on her alleged involvement and benefits derived from a previous hotel business in Washington, D.C., associated with her father, Donald Trump. The stance of the Attorney General is clear-cut: notwithstanding Ivanka’s potential disassociation from certain aspects of the Trump Organization, she remains financially interconnected and continues to benefit from various commercial ventures.
Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who are brothers of Ivanka Trump, are expected to testify with their father in the continuing legal proceedings. The central allegation pertains to President Trump’s purported inflation of his asset valuations in financial records, with the aim of obtaining more favorable loan and insurance conditions. The trial continues to attract significant media attention, generating a considerable level of anticipation for the testimonies of key members of the Trump family.
