Earlier this week, former President Donald Trump said that Special Counsel Jack Smith had sent him a “target” letter, suggesting that he will soon be detained and charged with crimes linked to the protest that took place on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol Building.
Smith is also targeting Trump for the way he handled the sensitive papers that were discovered at Mar-a-Lago last year.
Trump posted about the most recent witch hunt related to January 6:
“On Sunday night, while I was with my family, having just arrived from the Turning Point event in Florida, where I won the Straw Poll against all other Republican candidates with 85.7%, with all polls showing me leading in the Republican Primary by very substantial numbers, almost everyone predicting that I will be the Republican Nominee for President, and as I am leading Democrat Joe Biden in the polls by a lot, HORRIFYING NEWS for our Country was given to me by my attorneys”
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and indictment.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz, (R-FL), has put forward legislation aiming to defund the current investigation by Smith in anticipation of a potential new indictment because he is tired of the Biden Justice Department’s unusual persecution of Trump.
Gaetz’s bill comes at a time when Robert Hur, a special counsel assigned by AG Merrick Garland to look into Joe Biden’s improper handling of sensitive records, hasn’t made much noise since he was given authorization in January. It also happens at the same time as Trump’s Tuesday prediction that Smith would shortly indict him in relation to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
Only a few hours following Trump’s revelation on Truth Social, Gaetz posted on Twitter, “I will be introducing legislation to DEFUND Jack Smith’s witch hunt against President Trump.”
“They are attacking our democracy and engaging in election interference right now. The United States Congress has the capability to stop this election interference, and we must act immediately!” Gaetz declared forcefully.
Gaetz contended that if Trump weren’t ahead of Biden in an increasing number of polls in a podcast clip that was shared with his comments, he wouldn’t be in such legal danger.
The Republican lawmaker also criticized the Justice Department for its “lack of transparency” concerning the investigation’s actual participants, citing worries about “the team of vicious Democrats” who had a role in special counsel Robert Mueller’s “Russia collusion” investigation into Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Trump added to his statement regarding the most recent persecution by leftists in the deep state:
“So now, Joe Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland, who I turned down for the United States Supreme Court (in retrospect, based on his corrupt and unethical actions, a very wise decision!), together with Joe Biden’s Department of Injustice, have effectively issued a third Indictment and Arrest of Joe Biden’s NUMBER ONE POLITICAL OPPONENT, who is largely dominating him in the race for the Presidency.”
“Gaetz’s bill comes after Trump pleaded not guilty to 37 federal charges stemming from Smith’s investigation into his alleged improper retention of classified records at Mar-a-Lago last month,” Fox News reported.
The charges include willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice and false statements. The indictment is the first time in U.S. history that a former president has faced federal criminal charges.
Trump is also facing 34 felony charges in New York for allegedly falsifying business records.
On Tuesday, comments made by Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis about Trump in relation to the violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, caused a social media uproar.
DeSantis asserted that Trump might have responded to the disturbance more “forcefully” during a press conference in South Carolina. DeSantis responded to Trump’s admission that he got a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith informing him that he is the subject of a grand jury investigation into the events of January 6. DeSantis is challenging Trump and other GOP candidates for the Republican nomination for president.
DeSantis advocated against prosecuting Trump for his actions despite suggesting that he ought to have acted more that day.
“So look, there’s a difference between being brought up on criminal charges and doing things like, for example, I think it was shown how he was in the White House and didn’t do anything while, while things were going on. He should have come out more forcefully, of course, that. But to try to criminalize that, that’s a different issue entirely, and I think that we want to be in a situation where, you know, you don’t have one side just constantly trying to put the other side in jail. And that unfortunately is what we’re seeing now,” DeSantis argued.

Leftwing CNN’s report on the matter states that “A target letter from federal prosecutors to Trump makes clear that prosecutors are focused on Trump’s actions in the investigation into overturning the 2020 election – and not just of those around him who tried to stop his election loss.”
“Justice Department regulations allow for prosecutors to notify subjects of an investigation that they have become a target. Often a notification that a person is a target is a strong sign an indictment could follow, but it is possible the recipient is not ultimately charged. Those notifications aren’t required, but prosecutors have the discretion to notify subjects that they have become a target. Once informed, a target has the opportunity to present evidence or testify to the grand jury if they choose,” the outlet added. the site noted.
