Jon Stewart Blasts Democrats Over Plans to Impeach Trump Again, Calls Hearings a Performative Waste of Time

Comedian and political commentator Jon Stewart is criticizing Democrats who want to pursue another impeachment of President Trump, arguing that the party would be wasting valuable time on political theater instead of addressing the economic problems facing Americans.

Stewart made the remarks during Wednesday’s episode of his podcast, The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart, after a listener asked whether Democrats would be making a strategic mistake by attempting to impeach Trump if they regain control of Congress in the November midterm elections.

The longtime Daily Show host made clear that he has little confidence another impeachment effort would produce meaningful results. He argued that previous congressional investigations and impeachment proceedings failed to deliver the accountability Democrats had promised.

Stewart described the prospect of another round of congressional hearings as a lengthy political performance that would accomplish little. He said he had no interest in watching lawmakers spend months staging hearings while Americans continue struggling with economic pressures.

Rather than pursuing impeachment, Stewart urged Democrats to concentrate on restructuring the economy and addressing the growing divide between workers struggling to cover everyday expenses and Americans benefiting from rising investment portfolios.

He described the country’s current problems as a situation requiring emergency attention, arguing that elected officials should prioritize the most immediate economic concerns instead of devoting their energy to another confrontation with Trump.

Stewart also questioned whether Democrats could realistically achieve anything through additional investigations into the president or his family’s business interests. He argued that powerful political figures have repeatedly demonstrated an ability to delay investigations until congressional attention shifts elsewhere.

The comedian pointed to the aftermath of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot as an example of what he considers Congress’s inability to produce lasting consequences through investigations. He questioned why another impeachment effort would succeed when earlier proceedings had not removed Trump from office.

Trump was impeached twice during his first administration, first in December 2019 over his dealings with Ukraine and again in January 2021 following the Capitol riot. The Senate acquitted him in both cases, allowing him to remain in office through the end of his first term.

Stewart’s comments come as some Democrats discuss potential investigations and impeachment proceedings should their party regain control of the House. Proposals have included renewed scrutiny of Trump’s administration, his family’s business activities and decisions made by senior federal officials.

The president addressed the possibility of another impeachment during remarks at the White House on Wednesday. Trump dismissed the threats and argued that Democrats had previously pursued impeachment without sufficient justification.

Trump also said he had deliberately avoided using presidential authority to pursue former political opponents, including Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Barack Obama. He described the presidency as a position that should be treated with respect and said he had exercised restraint despite the impeachment efforts against him.

Stewart’s criticism follows earlier remarks questioning whether Democratic congressional leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries would be capable of delivering meaningful policy changes if their party regained power. He has argued that simply opposing Trump would not be enough and that Democrats would need to present concrete economic proposals.

The latest remarks underscore a disagreement over how Democrats should use congressional power if they gain seats in November. While some lawmakers have discussed renewed investigations, Stewart believes another impeachment effort would distract from economic issues that he considers more urgent.
