A journalist has been apprehended and is currently in the hands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Documentation indicates that Mario Guevara was discharged from the jail’s oversight at 3:26 a.m. on Wednesday. Upon his release, the jurisdiction he was transferred to was up for speculation. It was subsequently validated by Channel 2 Action News, from direct correspondence with ICE officials, that Guevara is presently under their detainer.
The jurisdiction of Guevara has been under deliberation since Monday, when a judge awarded him a bond. However, his legal representative, Giovanni Diaz, has asserted that he was not instantly released due to ICE enforcing a 48-hour hold on Guevara. As per Diaz, while Guevara does not hold the status of a legal permanent resident, he is authorized to reside and be employed within the United States.
Mario Guevara’s arrest took place in the midst of a demonstration, in Doraville, which he was actively documenting on Chamblee Tucker Road. His detainment occurred on Saturday and was carried out by the local law enforcement officers while Guevara was broadcasting live. The broadcast displays him peacefully standing on the sidewalk, capturing footage of the unfolding demonstration.
Later in the broadcast, Guevara is seen relocating into the street which becomes the pivotal moment when enforcement officers apprehend him. Throughout the ordeal, he identifies himself as part of the press. His affiliation to press isn’t just announced, it is visibly authenticated by his gear – a protective vest embellished with ‘PRESS’ clearly emblazoned.
Guevara took refuge in the United States, back in 2004, due to the perilous nature of his occupation as a political correspondent in El Salvador. His work detailing immigration enforcement has earned him significant recognition from authorities.
During his career, he contributed to Mundo Hispanico, the most widely circulated Spanish newspaper in Georgia. Guevara’s extensive experience and distinguished reputation in the field eventually led him to launch his own exclusive news outlet.
