A recent episode of ‘Married At First Sight’ has seen participant Lauren Hall sharply criticized by the panel of judges. An incendiary commitment ceremony concluded with Lauren and Clint Rice, her television spouse, exiting from the show. Lauren’s choice of language towards other contestants was a source of contention, leading to tension and questions from the experts in the Sunday episode.
The reality show participant had offensively labelled the group as ‘boganic’, which was brought to attention by one of the experts, John Aiken. Seeking clarification, he asked: ‘What does that mean?’ Lauren, unapologetically, responded: ‘It is bogan behaviour,’ before explaining further: ‘Classless. It’s just lacking class I would say.’
As the other couples began to voice their objections, Lauren dismissed them: ‘You’re embarrassing. Please just stop talking to me,’ she told them. This led her to ask, ‘Do we have a curtain that we can pull across?’ This remark spurred John to closely scrutinize Lauren and her actions during the course of the drama-filled evening.
He addressed her, and drew attention to her questionable choice of words; words including ‘psycho’, ‘animals’ and others which were indicative of her distancing herself from fellow show participants. He further pointed out her patronizing manner, pointing out her disparaging tone that made it sound like she considered herself superior to other participants, and asked her directly if she thought she was superior to them.
The reality star mused over the question before finally answering. She confessed that she felt her behaviour at dinner parties and during the couple’s retreat to be more appropriate than the behaviour exhibited by her peers in the reality show. For this reason, she admitted, she felt morally superior.
Lauren defended her standoffish behaviour by explaining her protective ‘cold, hard exterior’. She acknowledged that her failure to ‘drop her walls’ promptly may have led others to wrongfully judge her. Her claim that her strict facial expressions were responsible for the misunderstanding raised some eyebrows among the group.
She confessed her shyness to John, and also revealed that she originally comes off as aloof. This admission was met by immediate objection by another expert, Mel Schilling, who interrupted the bride to point out that there is a stark difference between being shy and being rude or disrespectful.
Mel noted that Lauren seemed to be overestimating her personality, as her pattern of behaviour reflected rudeness more than the shyness she was claiming. Mel reminded Lauren of John’s previous question about her perceived superiority over the group and asserted that their observations of her, including her unspoken communication, indicated a definite ‘yes’.
Following Melissa’s harsh callout, Lauren attempted to defend herself by blaming other’s misinterpretation of her actions – they considered her rude while she believed otherwise. She refuted this, saying that people’s perception was their issue.
Encouraging Lauren to self-reflect, Mel suggested that Lauren starts asking herself why her actions are leading others to feel negatively towards her. She further probed if Lauren realized the impact of her throwaway comments and her passive-aggressive jibes towards the group.
Lauren, avoiding Mel’s questions, tried to redirect the blame onto the group, claiming they too were guilt of name-calling. However, Mel countered this by reminding her that the conversation was about Lauren’s behaviour, not the group’s.
Mel pointed out that as an adult, it’s important for Lauren to take responsibility for her actions and words. She expressed concern that Lauren was ignoring her flaws and not taking accountability. She questioned whether Lauren was ready to change.
The tension-filled confrontation concluded with Lauren and Clint announcing their decision to exit from the experiment. Claiming their relationship had been more of a friendship than a romantic one, they decided to continue their camaraderie outside the show. Despite other participants sniggering and dissenting, the pair left the heated commitment ceremony together in a dramatic exit.
