Maine Democrat Graham Platner Hit With Sexting Scandal After Wife Reportedly Found Explicit Messages

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing another controversy after reports surfaced that his wife discovered sexually explicit text messages between him and multiple women and alerted members of his campaign last year.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, uncovered the messages in spring 2025, only months after the couple married in fall 2024. The issue reportedly became known within Platner’s campaign by August 2025, shortly before he appeared alongside Bernie Sanders at a Labor Day rally where Sanders endorsed his Senate campaign.

Despite the revelations, campaign aides allegedly decided to keep the matter private and characterize it as a personal issue between Platner, his wife, and their marriage counselor.

The exact number of women involved in the exchanges was not disclosed in the report.

Gertner defended her husband publicly and insisted the couple had worked through the situation.

“We did the hard work that marriage requires. We went to counseling. We were honest with each other in ways that weren’t easy,” she told the Journal. “And we came through it, not in spite of how much we’ve been through, but because of how much we love each other and the life we’ve built.”

“I know who Graham is,” she added. “I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t.”

The sexting allegations add to a growing list of controversies surrounding Platner’s campaign.

The left-wing candidate has already faced scrutiny over a tattoo resembling a Nazi “Totenkopf” symbol, old Reddit posts mocking a wounded American soldier, and crude online comments about women and prostitution.

Earlier this month, reports highlighted a Reddit comment in which Platner discussed military contractors spending leave “banging hookers in Thailand” to avoid taxes while overseas.

Despite the mounting scandals, national Democrats have continued backing Platner as a populist outsider candidate and “oyster farmer” capable of challenging Republicans in Maine.

Platner is currently expected to win the Democratic primary on June 9 after former rival Gov. Janet Mills suspended her campaign. He also reportedly maintains a polling advantage over incumbent Susan Collins heading into the general election.
