First Lady Melania Trump announced Thursday that five more Ukrainian and Russian children separated from their families by the ongoing war have safely returned home, marking another milestone in her humanitarian initiative aimed at reuniting children displaced by the conflict.
The latest reunifications bring the total number of children returned through the effort to at least 27 since the first lady launched the initiative in October by opening what she described as a direct humanitarian channel with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the White House, at least 22 of those children have been reunited with Ukrainian families.
“While diplomacy and peacebuilding are important to this effort, they are surpassed by our collective ability to place children above international disputes,” Melania Trump said in a statement. “Every reunion is a reminder that compassion, dignity, and family can transcend even the darkest of times: war.” She added that she and her representative will continue working with both the Russian and Ukrainian governments to return more children safely to their families and communities.
The reunification effort comes amid continued international concern over children removed from Ukraine since Russia‘s full-scale invasion began in 2022. The United Nations has verified more than 1,200 child abductions, while Ukrainian officials estimate the true number could exceed 20,000. Humanitarian organizations have alleged that some children were placed into Russian adoption programs or sent to facilities for political indoctrination and military training.
Ukrainian officials have reported that many children who return home suffer from severe psychological trauma, malnutrition, and inadequate medical care after years of separation. In 2023, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s children’s rights commissioner over alleged war crimes related to the transfer of Ukrainian children, allegations that Moscow denies.
The latest reunifications come just days after President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House for discussions on the war and ongoing peace efforts. While negotiations over a broader resolution to the conflict continue, the administration has highlighted the return of displaced children as one of its most significant humanitarian achievements, with Melania Trump pledging to continue working until more families are reunited.
