Musk’s $288 Million Influence In Government: A New High Or Low?

“Wealth can undoubtedly open many doors,” stated Allison Morrow. As an example, Musk’s hefty contribution of $288 million towards the election campaigns of the GOP, including President Trump, positioned him to lead an entirely new Department of Government Efficiency. This role apparently gives him the power to terminate the employment of up to 280,000 federal workers and even close down whole departments. However, rich as he is, there are certain things that Musk’s wealth can’t buy or influence, as demonstrated by a series of setbacks he experienced within a day last week.

Initially, the citizens residing in Wisconsin did not vote in favor of the conservative judge whom Musk fervently backed by pouring $25 million into their campaign for the state Supreme Court. Within hours of this, his company Tesla announced a significant decline in sales by 13 percent, which is the largest downturn it has ever seen. This was immediately followed by rumour from anonymous sources within the White House, cited by Politico, claiming that Musk had exceeded his ‘welcome stay’ in Washington.

Adding to the rumors, it’s suggested that President Trump shared within his close circles that it was time for Musk to ‘retire’ from his duties at DOGE. Unsurprisingly, Musk was quick to label this story as a ‘fabrication’, while the White House side-stepped a direct response by stating that Musk was always intended to move on ‘once his revolutionary work at DOGE came to an end’. But, with an increasing number of Republican politicians privately venting their frustration that they’re getting caught in the backlash over Musk’s overexposure and personal unpopularity, such denial is becoming increasingly difficult.

In fact, the majority of voters seem to harbor a dislike towards him, with a ratio of 60-38 percent, making it increasingly evident that the ‘Musk Initiative’ appears to be eating dust. There’s no denial that Musk’s notorious fame might be problematic but according to White House insiders, Trump seems to have no plans of disassociating from him. A president famously known for dodging any form of reproach finds the controversial Musk a suitable ‘firewall’ to deflect the public outrage aimed at Trump’s government slashing actions.

When factoring in Musk’s vast wealth, his promise to financially back primary elections against rebellious Republicans and his proprietorship of X, Trump sees more advantages than drawbacks in retaining Musk within his inner circle. ‘I don’t think we’ve seen the zenith of Musk’s influence,’ said a source. With Trump still relying on Musk’s financial backing, and with Tesla’s unstable standing, Musk’s need for ‘his influence in the Presidential seat’ is more pressing than ever.
