Children who have not been vaccinated against measles are undergoing severe health issues due to an unconventional treatment being advocated by the leader of our nation’s healthcare system. The excessive consumption of Vitamin A — believed by the Health Secretary to be a potential cure for measles, in combination with cod liver oil that is likewise rich in Vitamin A — has resulted in cases of liver disorders and a yellowing of the skin among children suffering from measles.
The measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccines have shown an effectiveness rate of 97 percent after administering the two recommended doses. With respect to Vitamin A and its impact on measles-infected individuals, existing scientific data suggest it may have the potential to reduce mortality rates rather than actually restricting the infection itself.
Typically, Vitamin A is in given relatively low, age-appropriate doses to children who are hospitalized due to this infectious disease. Almost every medical expert stands firm on the necessity of using it in conjunction with, and not as a substitute for, vaccination. This vital distinction, however, seems to have been overlooked by the Health Secretary, who continues to market the supplement as providing an ‘almost miraculous and instantaneous recovery’ for those infected with measles.
This endorsement of Vitamin A as an effective protective measure against measles has generated a belief among some that preventative use of the supplement can safeguard children from infection. Excessive intake of Vitamin A can be particularly harmful as it is not expelled in the urine like many other vitamins, but instead remains deposited in the body fat.
In the long run, overconsumption could cause Vitamin A toxicity, leading to an array of health problems ranging from headaches and nausea to symptoms like yellow skin and liver complications visible in unvaccinated individuals. Following the promotion of cod liver oil and Vitamin A for treating measles, medical practitioners felt the urgency to communicate via media platforms, cautioning against these substances’ overuse and emphasizing the importance of the MMR vaccine.
Despite these warning messages, it seems they largely missed their mark among a segment of the population that remains suspicious of vaccines. It is this group whose children are becoming ill, and in some dreadful cases, even losing their lives to a disease that, up until a few years ago, was considered eradicated in the US.
As pointed out by one medical professional on the subject of Vitamin A, ‘The routine use as a preventative measure is particularly worrisome. When we witness children consuming it for prolonged periods of time, we begin to see the cumulative effect of its toxicity.’
