Netflix just suffered its worst week on Wall Street since April, with shares dropping nearly five percent amid growing backlash over the platform’s increasingly radical content targeting children.
The latest plunge was fueled by subscriber cancellations driven by outrage at trans and LGBTQ themes embedded in kids’ programming — content that critics say has gone too far.
Billionaire Elon Musk has added fuel to the fire, calling on his 227 million X followers to cancel their subscriptions. “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids,” Musk posted earlier this week, as part of a wave of messages blasting the streaming giant for pushing trans ideology on children.
Conservative backlash reached a boiling point after Charlie Kirk’s assassination, when Dead End: Paranormal Park creator Hamish Steele smeared the late Turning Point USA founder as a “Nazi” in a profane tirade posted on BlueSky. Steele’s show, which featured a young boy in drag and heavy LGBTQ messaging, had already drawn criticism. Netflix canceled it in 2023, but the damage to its brand lingered.
Steele’s attack on Kirk added to calls for accountability, and parents across the country began dropping their Netflix accounts in protest. The outcry came just as new animated programming with similar themes was rolling out.
Netflix’s stock is now reeling from the fallout. Yahoo Finance notes this week’s drop is the steepest since early spring, when another wave of user exits rattled investor confidence.
The company closed out 2022 with a staggering $136 billion wiped from its market cap — and appears to be sliding toward another PR disaster in 2025.
Once dominant in the streaming wars, Netflix is now increasingly seen by critics as a platform more concerned with pushing ideological agendas than providing family-friendly entertainment.
With Musk and other influential voices turning up the pressure, Netflix’s leadership may be forced to answer a question it’s long ignored: are parents still welcome here?
