On June 11, 2025, Pope Leo XIV concluded his weekly general audience with a prayer in the iconic St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. Amid global tensions, the Pope urged global leaders to resist the allure of resorting to ‘powerful and sophisticated weapons.’ This call to peace came around the time when President Donald J. Trump hinted at the potential use of considerable explosive force to eliminate Iran’s Fordo nuclear fuel enrichment facility, concealed beneath a mountain.
Pope Leo XIV, originally from the United States, implored that ‘we must not accustom ourselves to war.’ His plea for tranquility rang out to the masses during the public audience on June 18, bringing to light the dread of descending into ‘barbarism.’ His plea accompanied President Trump’s implication of the United States possibly siding with Israel in the case of Iran’s refusal to an ‘unconditional surrender.’
Shortly following the Pope’s plea, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, dismissed Trump’s demand for an ‘unconditional surrender’, provoking fear of further escalation in the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict. This reaction came amidst the inflamed tension between Israel and Iran, as they engaged on the sixth day of their ongoing war.
The conflict between Israel and Iran that kicked off early the previous Friday, saw the former initiate a sudden aerial offensive targeted at Iranian nuclear facilities and military figureheads. The goal was, ostensibly, to impede Iran’s ongoing effort to manufacture a nuclear bomb. It’s worth noting that, among the nine countries worldwide that have nuclear capabilities, Israel is the sole country in the Middle East to be so positioned; the other countries being The United States, The United Kingdom, France, China, Russia, North Korea, India, and Pakistan.
The war generated considerable international concern, especially after the revelation of Iran’s increased production of enriched uranium, as informed by the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency. On June 12, the agency stated, for the first time in nearly two decades, that Iran was not adhering to its nonproliferation commitments.
Iran refuted these claims vehemently and retaliated to Israel’s strikes, which had resulted in civilian casualties, with ballistic missile and drone attacks on cities such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and central Israel. Amidst this retaliation, Pope Leo once again delivered his message imploring world leaders to resist the temptation to employ ‘powerful and sophisticated weapons.’
A notable event in this period related to Israel’s conflict with Gaza, which had followed a Hamas assault on South Israel. The attack resulted in nearly 1,200 Israeli fatalities and the capture of approximately 250 hostages. The war that ensued lasted over 500 days.
During more than 500 days of ongoing conflict, Israeli forces have been reported to have caused over 55,000 Palestinian casualties amongst the 2.1 million inhabitants of Gaza, with more than 16,000 of the fatally affected being children, as per the Gaza Health Ministry. The devastation has led to a significant portion of the Gaza Strip being reduced to rubble.
Consequently, global outrage followed and on June 12, the U.N General Assembly passed a resolution demanding Israel to ‘immediately end the blockade in Gaza, open all border crossings and ensure that aid reaches the Palestinian civilian population throughout the Gaza Strip.’ The situation in Gaza had grown dire.
Despite the international outcry, the violence escalated. On June 17, as a crowd of desperate civilians sought aid from trucks in Gaza, Israeli tanks shot into the crowd, reportedly causing at least 59 fatalities. This incident marks one of the most gruesome events in the escalating violence.
In light of these events, the pastor of Holy Family Church, the only Catholic parish in the Gaza Strip, stated that the Palestinians’ agony in the enclave is being, unfortunately, overlooked. With each passing day, the need for a resolution to these conflicts becomes even more pressing.
Consequently, Pope Leo’s call for peace resonates significantly during this tumultuous global scenario. He continues to urge world leaders to reject the easy path of war and instead focus on diplomatic solutions and peace negotiation. Thus, making his stance clear, amidst an international community divided over the approach to these escalating tensions.
The underlining message remains that harmony should never be taken for granted, and war should not be normalized. The Pope’s words remind us that allowing ourselves to grow accustomed to war and violence is a step into ‘barbarism.’ His plea for global leaders to exercise restraint in the face of tense circumstances serves an important reminder of the lasting impact of war on societies.
Reflecting on Pope Leo’s message, the call for peace becomes even more substantial. The international community should heed his appeal and work toward peaceful resolution in times of tension and conflict. Moreover, nations should unite in their efforts to restrict the proliferation of nuclear weapons, ensuring a safer world for future generations. The hope lies in collective actions towards a peaceful world, away from the shadow of war and destruction.
