Ramaswamy: Allies Silencing Free Speech is a Wake-up Call

Vivek Ramaswamy recently appeared on ‘The Inghram Angle’ to deliberate on the concerning nature of freedom of speech not just within U.S. borders, but also internationally. Ramaswamy, who previously allied with the GOP, highlighted an ironic situation where those advocating for democracy and freedom of speech globally, are strangely reticent when it comes to calling out its suppression amongst our friends, including France and Brazil.

During his discourse, Ramaswamy observed, ‘It’s curious that those who are persistently amplifying their voices against authoritarianism in other parts of the world, aren’t vocal about censorship incidences such as the barring of a platform like X in Brazil.’ This reflecting what appears to be an emerging pattern across a range of cases and territories.

Drawing attention to Pavel Durov’s case, the man behind Telegram, who was brought into custody in France for apparent violations connected to their imposed limits on free speech, Ramaswamy pointed out the peculiar nature of this incident. ‘Interestingly, it wasn’t Russia that incarcerated Pavel, but France – a long-standing ally of the United States.’

Ramaswamy further extended his considerations, touching on the paradoxical nature of these advocates. ‘They appear to tout the values of freedom and democracy, and its propagation across the world. But it’s almost like they have a blind spot when it comes to fortifying the same standards within our fraternity of nations – be it France or Brazil, or even Canada and the UK.’

Adding another dimension to his observations, Ramaswamy elucidated his belief that it is outside the gamut of governmental control to decide what information should be made accessible to citizens. ‘My belief predicates on the premise that our strength as a nation echoes best when we are committed to safeguard this fundamental principle of free speech.’

He wanted to take this beyond bipartisan issues, stating, ‘This isn’t just about the political duality of Republicans or Democrats. When we stand by free speech, it needs to be an absolute commitment. It’s the embodiment of the American ethos. And unapologetically, I place myself, staunchly, on the side of the First Amendment.’

Ramaswamy interestingly put forward the proposition that the danger to America is not necessarily originating from external forces. ‘It’s a peculiar point of time for us, the democratic west, and specifically the United States. The forces threatening U.S. do not necessarily emanate from adversarial nations such as Russia, but rather from within.’

At the end of his discourse, he pointed towards those within the homeland who, in his views, are violating the principles held in high esteem for their objectives, in particular aligning with the leftist ideology. ‘We are being challenged from within our borders by certain elements of our own government eager to undermine our founding tenets for what seems to be narrow, partisan motives.’
