Nick Reiner, the son of legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner, is fighting in court to gain access to a $1.5 million inheritance left to him by the parents he is accused of murdering.
According to a newly filed court petition, Reiner is seeking the immediate release of $750,000 from a trust established by his father and mother, Michele Reiner, arguing that he needs the money to fund his legal defense as he faces two first-degree murder charges.
The trust reportedly stipulated that Reiner would receive half of the funds when he turned 30 and the remaining half at age 35. Now 32, Reiner claims trustee Paul Kanin has improperly withheld the money by raising concerns about his ability to manage the funds.
Court filings obtained by the Daily Mail allege Kanin has refused to distribute the inheritance based on what Reiner’s legal team described as unsubstantiated concerns regarding his competence.
Reiner had previously retained prominent defense attorney Alan Jackson to represent him in the criminal case. However, Jackson later withdrew after the trust funds were not released, leaving Reiner represented by a public defender.
In the petition, Reiner argues that the delay is harming his ability to mount an effective defense.
“Time is of the essence,” the filing states, asserting that every week without access to the trust money prevents his preferred legal team from properly preparing for trial.
His attorneys contend that continued delays are causing irreparable harm and accuse the trustee of spending trust assets on legal efforts aimed at preventing Reiner from obtaining funds that they argue are already legally his.
“Every additional week of delay is a week in which the counsel of his choice cannot investigate or prepare on his behalf,” the petition argues.
Reiner, who has reportedly struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues in the past, was arrested following the Dec. 14 killings of Rob and Michele Reiner inside their Brentwood mansion, a property estimated to be worth roughly $20 million.
Prosecutors charged him with two counts of first-degree murder and included a special circumstance allegation involving multiple murders.
If convicted, Reiner could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or potentially the death penalty.
The killings sent shockwaves through Hollywood, where Rob Reiner was widely known for directing and producing some of the entertainment industry’s most recognizable films. Authorities arrested Nick Reiner one day after investigators discovered the bodies of his parents inside the family’s home.
His effort to gain access to the inheritance now sets up a separate legal battle alongside the criminal proceedings that will determine his fate.
