Prominent Republican survey expert, Frank Luntz, recently shared his insights about the intriguing dynamics of voting patterns, particularly regarding the former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Luntz was sharing his thoughts in a conversational piece with CNN’s Michael Smerconish on a calm Saturday morning. He enlightened the audience about what Smerconish coined as a ‘gender gap’ in the support baselines of the two political figures.
Smerconish presented Luntz with a variety of polls, among which was a recent national survey by Fox News. The survey was carried out over a span of four days, from August 9 to August 12. The poll displayed a notable 22-point gender gap between Harris and Trump. To elaborate, Trump stood strong with a 12-point lead among male voters, while Harris led with a 10-point advantage among women.
President Joe Biden has been replaced by Harris as the Democrats’ likely presidential nominee after he announced to step down, leaving room for Harris with a hearty endorsement on July 21. A surge in support from female voters and the youth has placed Harris ahead of Trump in five out of seven crucial battleground states, as is apparent from recent polling averages.
Taking a deeper dive into the polling averages, Luntz highlighted an interesting trend among female voters. He suggested that the disparity between Trump and Harris in this regard could be compared to a ‘chasm’. Luntz humorously predicted that such a striking disagreement could potentially lead to severe family disagreements, resulting in married couples choosing separate pathways.
Luntz attributed this so-called ‘chasm’ to three key factors, including Trump’s relentless commitment to only criticize policy and not resort to personal attacks. Luntz voiced, ‘Firstly, they expect a leader to refrain from personal critique about their opponents. Secondly, they want their leaders to be forward-thinking and not dwell on past mistakes. Ironically, Trump continues to focus solely on policy without resorting to unnecessary personal disputes.’
Continuing his analysis, Luntz explained, ‘Thirdly, a sensitive economic climate and growing inflation have made lives more taxing for countless individuals. And what these people are seeking are leaders who acknowledge their struggles and work towards tangible resolutions.’ In light of Harris’s recent approach, Luntz seems to suggest that whereas she may be stating the evident, she is yet to present breakthrough solutions that address the root causes of these economic struggles.
Adding momentum to her campaign, Harris recently unveiled her first economic policy agenda. The primary focus is to alleviate the financial burdens of American households. A notable suggestion in this proposal involves the granting of a $25,000 assistance to over a million first-time buyers, contingent on their consistent rent payment history.
The proposed economic plan goes further by integrating a new child tax credit, other tax rebates, and following the White House’s recent efforts to negotiate lower Medicare prescription drug prices. These combined policies hope to culminate into a comprehensive economic strategy that addresses the ever-looming issue of living costs.
In contrast, during a recent rally in Asheville, North Carolina, Trump deliberated upon whether the economy was indeed the key concern for the nation. He expressed, just 15 minutes into his speech, ‘The they claim is our most important individual concern. In my viewpoint, there’s more to it than just that. Inflation is certainly crucial but bears its roots in the economic system.’
Trump went on to emphasize that although the economy remained a crucial issue, increasing crime rates and border security issues could not be ignored. His speech demonstrated his balanced approach in considering diverse needs and problems instead of seemingly focusing on a singular issue.
CNN election predictor Harry Enten recently conducted a pollster analysis, showing that Harris currently enjoys a national seven-point lead among women in a matchup with Trump. However, Trump still remains a strong contender, boasting a nine-point lead among the male demographic.
While the national polling landscape shows these results, battleground states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin reveal a different dynamic. In those states, Harris reportedly leads by a sizable 17-point margin among women, contrasting with Trump’s respectable fifteen-point lead among male voters.
Upon further inquiry from Smerconish about this marked gender gap, Luntz noted Saturday ‘This isn’t a blanket nationwide campaign. It’s concentrated in seven critical states. These states will become the epicenter for campaign advertisements, especially those carrying a negative undertone. And hence, these areas will be the focus of this intense political standoff.’
