President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning Saturday to Democrat-led cities facing unrest: don’t expect federal help unless you formally ask for it — and show respect while doing so.
The statement came after a string of anti-ICE protests turned violent in cities like Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Eugene, Oregon. Trump pointed to previous unrest during the end of the Biden administration in 2025, noting that federal intervention was decisive — but only when local leaders cooperated.
Trump said he gave direct orders to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem: “Under no circumstances are we going to participate in various poorly run Democrat Cities with regard to their Protests and/or Riots unless, and until, they ask us for help.”
However, Trump made clear that the rule does not apply to attacks on federal buildings. “We will, however, guard, and very powerfully so, any and all Federal Buildings that are being attacked by these highly paid Lunatics, Agitators, and Insurrectionists,” he wrote.
ICE and Border Patrol officers have reportedly been authorized to use force in response to any assault on federal personnel or property. “There will be no spitting in the faces of our Officers… or rock or brick throwing at our vehicles,” Trump said. “Those responsible will suffer an equal, or more, consequence.”
He cited the latest unrest in Eugene as a tipping point. “Last night in Eugene, Oregon, these criminals broke into a Federal Building, and did great damage,” Trump wrote, blaming local police for “doing nothing.” The Eugene Police Department later admitted that protesters breached the federal building, and said their officers attempted to de-escalate the situation.
Trump emphasized that while defending federal property remains a non-negotiable federal duty, state and city governments must take the lead on restoring order in their own jurisdictions. He pointed to the 2025 Los Angeles riots, where federal help was welcomed. “We couldn’t have done it without the help of the Federal Government,” Trump quoted the city’s police chief as saying.
Now, the standard has shifted. Federal aid, Trump declared, will be contingent on a formal request — and on local leaders using the word “PLEASE.”
He also warned that any further assault on federal facilities would be met with overwhelming force. “ICE, Border Patrol or, if necessary, our Military, will be extremely powerful and tough in the protection of our Federal Property,” he said.
Trump framed the announcement as a return to law and order, saying it reflects the core mandate that got him elected. “LAW AND ORDER — That’s what America wants, and that’s what America is getting!”
As clashes between federal authorities and anti-ICE protesters escalate, the president’s new stance forces blue-city officials into a decision: cooperate with Washington or face the consequences alone.
