President Trump announced Saturday that he intends to nominate veteran attorney James McDonald to serve as the next United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, one of the nation’s most influential federal prosecutorial positions.
The Southern District of New York, often referred to as the SDNY, oversees many of the country’s highest-profile criminal and national security cases, including major terrorism, financial fraud, and public corruption investigations.
Trump highlighted McDonald’s extensive legal experience and prior service in his administration while making the announcement on Truth Social.
“A native of the Great State of Oklahoma, Jamie is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York, and served as Director of Enforcement at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission during my First Term,” the president wrote.
McDonald previously worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the SDNY and later served as Director of Enforcement at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission during President Trump’s first term. He is currently a senior partner at the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell and previously clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.
Trump expressed confidence that McDonald is uniquely qualified to lead one of the country’s most important federal prosecutor’s offices.
“I am confident that Jamie will deliver strong results for our Country as the next United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, as he has the respect of, and will work fantastically with, our Law Enforcement Patriots, the Legal Community, and the Judicial Bench,” Trump said.
“Good luck Jamie. I have no doubt about your future greatness!”
The nomination comes as President Trump continues to reshape key positions throughout the federal government. The announcement follows the president’s indication that current SDNY chief Jay Clayton could be tapped to become the next Director of National Intelligence, a move that may face opposition from Senate Democrats over the administration’s plans for interim leadership changes.
If confirmed, McDonald would take charge of one of the most closely watched U.S. Attorney’s offices in the country, overseeing cases that often have national implications and significant impacts on law enforcement and national security policy.
