President Donald Trump has rescinded Secret Service protection for former National Security Adviser John Bolton, despite Bolton being the target of an Iranian assassination plot.
Bolton had been under continuous Secret Service protection since December 2021, following credible threats from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). In August 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice charged IRGC member Shahram Poursafi with plotting to assassinate Bolton, likely in retaliation for the U.S. killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in January 2020.
The decision to terminate Bolton’s security detail was part of a broader action by President Trump, who also revoked security clearances for 50 former national security officials. This move has raised concerns among former officials, who view it as a departure from traditional protocols that ensure the safety of individuals facing credible threats.
