Trump Vows To Rededicate America As One Nation Under God

President Donald Trump declared Thursday that the United States will be “rededicated as one nation under God,” as he addressed the 74th annual National Prayer Breakfast with a renewed focus on faith, religious liberty, and Christian values. The president also announced a national event scheduled for May 17, inviting Americans to gather on the National Mall for prayer and thanksgiving.

“We are going to do something that everyone said, ‘That’s tough.’ We’re going to rededicate America as one nation under God,” Trump told the crowd. “You just can’t have a great country if you don’t have religion. You have to believe in something.”

Trump used the platform to speak about Christianity’s foundational role in American life, while taking aim at former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama. He called Biden “the worst president we’ve ever had” and labeled Obama “a terrible divider of our country.” Trump contrasted their records with what he described as his administration’s “tremendous success” in uniting Americans through strength and faith.

“I don’t know how a person of faith can vote for a Democrat,” he said. “I really don’t. And I know we have some here today, and I don’t know why they’re here. They certainly don’t give us their vote.”

Much of Trump’s speech veered away from his teleprompter. He acknowledged it with humor, telling the crowd, “At some point, I’m going to get right back onto the teleprompter and you’re going to say that was a wonderful speech.” But he continued to speak from the heart, emphasizing faith in God and America’s founding principles.

“On that momentous day in 1776, history changed forever,” Trump said. “Our founders proclaimed the immortal truths that all of us are made free and equal by the hand of our creator. Some major politicians refuse to say the word ‘God.’ I say it.”

The president reaffirmed that Americans’ rights come not from government, but “by God Almighty himself.” He also referenced his administration’s crackdown on anti-Christian violence at home and abroad, including a task force created in February 2025 to investigate attacks on Christians. Trump condemned the Biden administration for “targeting peaceful Christians while ignoring violent, anti-Christian offenses.”

“My Administration will not tolerate anti-Christian weaponization of government,” Trump said in a past executive order. In October, he designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” for widespread Christian persecution and pledged to protect Christians globally.

Trump closed his remarks by highlighting his military efforts against ISIS during his first term and criticized the Biden administration for allowing terrorist elements to reemerge. “The election was rigged and I wasn’t there, and for four years, ISIS rebuilt,” Trump said. “And we knocked the hell out of them the other day in Nigeria because they were killing Christians. I said, ‘You can’t do that.’”
