Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the United States and Iran failed to reach a peace agreement after nearly a full day of negotiations in Islamabad, leaving the future of the fragile cease-fire in doubt.
Speaking after roughly 21 hours of talks, Vance said discussions were “meaningful” but ultimately unsuccessful.
“The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement,” he told reporters, placing the blame on Iran’s refusal to accept U.S. terms.
At the center of the breakdown was Iran’s unwillingness to commit to abandoning its nuclear ambitions. Vance emphasized that securing an “affirmative commitment” from Tehran to forgo nuclear weapons remains a core objective for President Donald Trump.
The negotiations marked a rare moment of direct engagement, with U.S. officials including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner participating alongside Iranian representatives led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Despite the historic nature of the talks, both sides remained far apart on key issues. Iran has continued to demand full sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, the right to enrich uranium, no restrictions on its missile program, and compensation for damage sustained during the conflict.
The Trump administration, meanwhile, has prioritized reopening the Strait of Hormuz to stabilize global oil flows and dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities to prevent the development of a nuclear weapon.
Vance said the U.S. negotiating team made a “good faith” effort and left behind what he described as a final offer. “We were quite accommodating,” he noted, adding that the next move now rests with Iran.
Uncertainty now looms over the two-week cease-fire brokered by Pakistan. Vance declined to clarify whether the pause in fighting remains intact, while Iranian officials issued statements signaling defiance and warning they would not abandon their strategic goals.
The collapse of the talks raises the possibility that the six-week conflict, which has already disrupted global energy markets and heightened regional tensions, could resume if no last-minute breakthrough is reached.
For now, diplomacy has stalled, and both sides appear to be preparing for what comes next.
